SOSA COVID-19 Update

Hello Sailors,

While the SOSA sailing season is still a little ways off with the current situation it is necessary for us to be proactive and do our part in the fight against COVID19. It is obvious now that extreme measures are required in order to slow the spread. Therefore the club facilities, clubhouse, compound and sheds, will be closed as of March 31st until further notice. We request that if you wish to remove personal belongings from any of these facilities please do so before that date. After that date there will be no access to the clubhouse, compound and sheds without approval and supervision by either the Commodore, Vice Commodore or Buildings and Grounds Director.

As the situation evolves we will reassess these measures and do whatever we can to enable members to enjoy their boats and the lake but the health and safety of our members and the community is our priority.

Even without operations the club requires your support to maintain its existence, we need to pay our fixed expenses such as taxes, insurance, phone, electricity etc. Therefore we ask that you register and pay your membership and boat storage fees as usual. Depending on the length of the disruption we will consider applying discounts to next year's registration up to 100% of your membership not including boat storage fees. We will only keep what we need to keep the club in the black. If you are not prepared to support the club in this manner we request that you remove your boat from the premises before the end of April. If you are not able to pay due to the impact of the current crisis please inform an executive member. We will consider case by case and all communication will be kept confidential.

Normally about this time of year we would be holding our AGM, at this time it will be postponed until further notice and no events will be scheduled until it is appropriate to do so.

The following is information directly from the District of Summerland regarding public green space;

District of Summerland Statement on Compliance with COVID-19 Measures
Applicable to SOSA Grounds which are designated as Park Land

"District staff will be monitoring these parks to ensure compliance," stated Chief Administrative Officer, Anthony Haddad. "Access to public trails, greenspaces and beaches is still possible but to ensure they remain open, our residents will need to make sure they do not gather in groups, keep 2 metres (6 feet) apart and take every precaution possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19."

What We Have to Offer

We have storage space on the grounds and in the compound for dinghy sailboats and non-powered small watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and sailboards. Only boats that are actively used can be stored on the grounds.

In the summer we run sailing lessons offering the new CYA CANSail program (formerly Learn to Sail), for sailors from 6 years old to adults. CANSail refers to Canada's updated sailor training standards. CANSail is a leading sail training initiative to foster performance in sailing and life long participation in the sport. CANSail is designed to be a set of progressive learn to sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills. It allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidates key skills and solid experiences before adding complex skills.
